MOOG servo cylinders are high-performance electrohydraulic actuators designed for applications requiring precise control of position, speed and force.
Compared with a conventional hydraulic cylinder, a servo cylinder integrates feedback systems and, depending on the configuration, can be combined with dedicated servo valves or proportional valves. The result is a compact, precise actuation system capable of high dynamic performance.
MOOG develops servo actuators for industrial applications, testing systems, simulation and motion control, with different configurations depending on system characteristics and required performance.
How a MOOG Servo Cylinder Is Configured
Depending on the application, a servo cylinder may include:
- a hydraulic cylinder designed for high dynamic performance;
- a servo valve or proportional valve installed on the actuator assembly;
- an integrated position sensor for continuous monitoring of the piston rod position;
- feedback systems and load cells in configurations designed for testing applications;
- manifolds and hydraulic connections specifically designed for the application.
This level of integration allows highly accurate control of actuator movement and enables its performance to be adapted to the required operating conditions.
Main Types of MOOG Servo Actuators
The MOOG range includes different configurations of hydraulic servo actuators, including:
- Single-Ended Test Servo Actuators, designed for structural testing, fatigue testing and industrial applications;
- Double-Ended Test Servo Actuators, suitable for dynamic applications and multi-axis testing systems;
- Low-Force Servo Actuators, for applications requiring low forces and high precision;
- Hydrostatic Bearing Test Actuators, designed for high-dynamic applications with reduced friction;
- special and custom configurations, developed according to specific force, stroke and control requirements.
MOOG servo cylinders are used in a wide range of applications, including test benches and fatigue testing, structural and automotive testing, simulation systems, presses, steel industry applications, material handling and special motion control systems.
MOOG Servo Cylinder Overhaul
In this case, CAMI carried out the complete overhaul of a MOOG servo cylinder with a 140 mm bore, working on the mechanical and hydraulic parts of the unit to restore its correct operating conditions.
Overhauling a servo cylinder requires particular attention to dimensional tolerances, sliding surfaces, seals and feedback systems, all of which are essential to ensure accurate and reliable operation.
1. Cylinder Body Inspection and Restoration
The cylinder body is inspected to assess its condition and identify any signs of wear or dimensional irregularities.
These checks make it possible to determine the work required to restore the correct operating tolerances.
2. Piston Rod Restoration
The piston rod is inspected and, when necessary, subjected to restoration and chrome plating to recover the required surface and dimensional characteristics.
The quality of the piston rod surface is particularly important to ensure smooth operation and long seal life.
3. Piston Rod Reassembly
Following machining and dimensional checks, the piston rod is reinstalled in the cylinder body together with new seals and the components required to restore the unit.
Particular attention is paid to smooth movement and correct mating of the mechanical components.
4. Position Transducer Installation and Verification
The servo cylinder incorporates a feedback system that continuously detects the position of the piston rod.
During the overhaul, the components associated with the position transducer are therefore also checked and reassembled, as they are essential for correct operation of the control system.
5. Servo Valve, Reassembly and Final Testing
The assembly may be equipped with a MOOG servo valve dedicated to controlling cylinder movement.
CAMI works directly on the mechanical and hydraulic parts of the servo cylinder, while servo valve overhaul activities are managed through MOOG.
Once all work has been completed, the unit is fully reassembled and subjected to the required final checks before being returned to the customer.
CAMI Service for MOOG Servo Cylinders
CAMI supplies and overhauls MOOG servo cylinders, working on the mechanical and hydraulic components of the actuator and supporting customers in the management of the complete assembly.
The experience gained with these components enables CAMI to work on units used both in industrial applications and in systems designed for test benches, simulation and high-performance motion control.
